What is PEB Insulation?

PEB stands for Pre Engineered Building. These are steel framed industrial structures designed and fabricated in a factory, then bolted together on site. Almost every modern factory shed, warehouse, godown, automobile plant, and logistics hub in India today is built using PEB technology because it is faster, lighter, and cheaper than conventional RCC construction.

The problem with PEB structures is that the metal roof sheet has almost zero thermal mass. On a 42°C summer afternoon, the underside of a bare PEB metal roof can easily cross 65°C. That radiant heat dumps straight onto the shop floor, machinery, workers, and stored goods below.

PEB insulation solves this. A reflective insulation layer installed between the roof sheet and the purlin reflects radiant heat back outward, before it ever enters the building. The trapped air in the bubble core also blocks conductive heat transfer, and the aluminium foil acts as a vapour barrier that stops monsoon condensation from forming on the underside of the metal sheet.

Why Every PEB Building in India Needs Insulation

Here is what happens inside an uninsulated PEB shed:

  1. The metal roof absorbs solar radiation all day. Surface temperature climbs above 70°C by 2 pm.
  2. Heat radiates downward into the building. Shop floor temperature rises 8 to 12°C above ambient.
  3. Workers slow down. Heat related productivity loss in Indian factories is well documented.
  4. Machinery overheats. Electronics fail faster. Lubricants thin out.
  5. Stored goods (FMCG, pharma, electronics, food) degrade.
  6. AC load rises sharply if the building is conditioned. Power bills jump 30 to 50 percent.
  7. During monsoon, the cool underside of the metal sheet collides with warm humid interior air. Condensation forms and drips down onto goods, machinery, and the floor.
  8. Rain on bare PEB metal roof creates noise above 85dB, making conversation impossible.

A properly installed reflective PEB insulation layer addresses every single one of these problems with a single product.

How TigerShield™ PEB Insulation Works

A TigerShield™ PEB insulation sheet has three functional layers:

  1. Top layer. Pure aluminium foil with 97 percent reflectivity. Bounces radiant heat back toward the roof before it can transfer into the building.
  2. Core layer. Closed cell polyethylene bubble film. Traps still air inside thousands of sealed bubbles, which slows conductive and convective heat transfer.
  3. Bottom layer. A second aluminium foil layer (in double foil variants). Reflects any residual heat back, and acts as a vapour barrier against monsoon condensation.

Combined, the sheet works as a three way thermal barrier in a single roll that weighs less than 5 kg and installs in under an hour for a typical 1000 sqft section.

Where TigerShield™ PEB Insulation Goes (Installation Methods)

There are three standard installation methods for PEB insulation. The right one depends on whether you are insulating a new build or retrofitting an existing structure.

Method 1: Over Purlin (New Construction, Preferred) The insulation roll is laid flat across the purlins, foil side facing down. The metal roof sheet is then fixed on top. This gives the cleanest finish, full coverage, and the best thermal performance because it eliminates thermal bridging at the purlin contact points.

Method 2: Under Purlin (Retrofit, Most Common) If your PEB is already built and you want to add insulation, the sheet is stapled or nailed to the underside of the purlins. The insulation hangs below the structural members. Easy to retrofit, lower disruption, slightly lower performance than over purlin.

Method 3: Sag Method (Between Purlins) The insulation is loosely draped between purlins so that it sags slightly into the cavity. Used when you need to maintain visible purlin lines from inside (architectural exposed purlin look).

For most Indian PEB sheds we recommend Method 1 if it is a new build, or Method 2 if it is a retrofit. Both work. Our team can advise based on your site photos.

Which TigerShield™ PEB Insulation Thickness Should You Choose?

Building TypeRecommended ProductThicknessWhy
Small PEB godown, under 5000 sqftThermaFlex6mmCost effective, basic thermal break
Standard PEB factory shedThermaPrime10mmBest value, double bubble + double foil
Large industrial PEB, 25000+ sqftThermaPlus12mmHigher thermal resistance for big spans
Hot zone PEB (Rajasthan, Telangana, AP)ThermaPlus12mmExtra reflectivity for extreme heat
Air conditioned PEBThermaPlus or ThermaGuard12mm or 20mmMaximises HVAC efficiency, fast payback
Cold storage inside PEBThermaGuard20mmHeaviest duty for sub zero applications

If you are unsure, the safe default for almost any Indian factory shed is ThermaPrime 10mm. It is what most of our PEB contractors order by default.

PEB Insulation vs PUF Sandwich Panel. Which is Better?

This is the most common question we get from PEB buyers. Here is the honest comparison.

FactorTigerShield™ Bubble PEB InsulationPUF Sandwich Panel
Material costLowHigh (3 to 5 times more)
Installation labourLow (just roll out and fix)High (lifting, sealing, finishing)
Time to installFast (1 day for 5000 sqft)Slow (3 to 5 days for same area)
Retrofit possibleYes, easilyNo, only at construction
Thermal performanceVery good for most factoriesSlightly better, expensive overkill for many uses
Fire ratingBS Part 6 and Part 7Varies, some panels off gas in fire
Weight on PEB structureNegligibleSignificant (impacts column design)
Repair if damagedCut and patch easilyReplace full panel
Suited for cold roomsYes (ThermaGuard 20mm)Yes
Suited for general factoriesYes, idealYes, but over specified

The honest verdict. PUF sandwich panels make sense for cold storage, food processing, and pharma clean rooms where insulation performance is mission critical. For 90 percent of Indian factory sheds, warehouses, and godowns, reflective bubble PEB insulation delivers 80 percent of the thermal benefit at 25 percent of the installed cost. That is why we sell vastly more bubble insulation to PEB contractors than the PUF panel companies do.

How TigerShield™ Solves Condensation in PEB Buildings

Condensation is the silent killer in Indian PEB buildings. It happens when warm humid air inside the shed touches the cool underside of the metal roof. The result is droplets that fall back onto stored goods, machinery, and finished products.

The aluminium foil layer on TigerShield™ PEB insulation works as a complete vapour barrier. Moisture cannot pass through it. The warm humid interior air never reaches the cold metal surface, so condensation simply cannot form. This single property has saved our customers in pharmaceutical, electronics, and packaged food sectors lakhs of rupees in spoiled inventory every monsoon.

TigerShield™

Acoustic Benefit. Why PEB Owners Choose TigerShield During Monsoon

Bare PEB metal roofs generate noise levels above 85dB during heavy rain. That is loud enough to make voice communication impossible and to cause measurable productivity drops in workers below.

A TigerShield™ PEB insulation layer reduces this monsoon rain noise by 15dB or more. The bubble core absorbs and dampens the sharp metallic ring of rain hitting the sheet. The result is a working environment where workers can hear each other, machinery alerts are audible, and stress levels drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which insulation is best for a PEB shed in India?
  • Can PEB insulation be installed after the building is built?
  • How thick should PEB insulation be?
  • Does PEB insulation stop condensation?
Which insulation is best for a PEB shed in India?

For most Indian PEB sheds, a 10mm double bubble double foil insulation like TigerShield™ ThermaPrime is the best balance of thermal performance, cost, and installation speed. For larger industrial PEBs in hot climate zones (Rajasthan, Telangana, AP, Gujarat) we recommend stepping up to ThermaPlus 12mm.

Can PEB insulation be installed after the building is built?

Yes. While installing over the purlin during PEB erection gives the cleanest result, retrofit installation under the purlin works very well and is the most common scenario for existing factory sheds. Most of our customers fall in this category.

How thick should PEB insulation be?

10mm is the most common choice for standard factory sheds. 12mm is recommended for large spans, hot climate zones, and air conditioned interiors. 6mm is sufficient for smaller godowns. 20mm is reserved for cold storage and heavy industrial use.

Does PEB insulation stop condensation?

Yes. The aluminium foil layer works as a complete vapour barrier. Moisture from inside the building cannot pass through to the cold metal roof surface, which means condensation cannot form. This is one of the most valuable benefits for monsoon prone Indian regions.
